[it]Ritorno sulle scene per i Julie’s Haircut, lo storico collettivo di musicisti emiliani, a tre anni di distanza dall’ultimo album. L’EP “The Wildlife Variations” è una coproduzione Trovarobato e WoodWorm e sarà disponibile dal 4 giugno in digitale e in un numero limitato di vinili 12” (vero artefatto per collezionisti e per fan del gruppo). Registrato presso lo studio Bunker di Rubiera, l’EP contiene quattro tracce scritte e prodotte dalla band.
I materiali dell’EP sono stati elaborati nell’arco di 3 anni, fin dai tempi delle prime date live del precedente album “Our secret ceremony” (uscito nel 2009 per A Silent Place).
I testi, scritti da Nicola Caleffi e Luca Giovanardi, riflettono l’interesse dei Julie’s per l’uomo e per il suo legame con la natura e con l’universo, attraverso riferimenti all’alchimia, al simbolismo e al rapporto tra magia e scienza.
Così come il pensiero alchemico ha fatto leva sull’iconografia, anche i testi sono carichi di immagini potenti e simboliche che fanno leva sull'”emozione” per raccontare qualcosa dell’uomo.
Keplero, citato in “Johannes”, è personaggio emblematico all’interno di questo discorso: la sua teoria della musica universalis si colloca a metà tra scienza e magia.
“Dark leopards of the moon” è un’immagine presa in prestito da un poema di William Butler Yeats, parimenti poeta e studioso d’alchimia: l’esplicitazione grafica sulla copertina di quest’immagine, oltre ad essere la manifestazione di un pensiero poetico (e quindi, di nuovo, la volontà di arrivare ad esprimere un'”emozione”), ha anche una forte valenza ironica e molti punti di contatto con la colazione con l’aragosta nella copertina del precedente “Our secret ceremony”.
“Il matrimonio del sole e della luna” è una descrizione tipica dell’iconografia alchemica dove due contrari si incontrano per generare una nuova realtà.
“Il fuoco nella notte” (Bonfire) è un tentativo di narrazione del formarsi di una comunità e del suo senso di appartenenza alla Terra.
Il titolo dell’EP “The Wildlife Variations” fa riferimento ad una possibile lettura di una natura scevra da sovrastrutture tecnologiche e di un uomo che, nonostante l’evoluzione attraverso i millenni, rimane biologicamente invariato da migliaia di anni. Così come i Julie’s, nel far musica adesso, mescolano tecnologie digitali recentissime e strumenti acustici dalla storia centenaria anch’essi sostanzialmente invariati da secoli.
L’EP anticipa e prepara l’uscita del prossimo album dei Julie’s Haircut che avverrà entro la fine del 2012, sempre per Trovarobato/Woodworm.[/it][en]
The Wildlife Variations is the new studio release by the celebrated Italian musician collective of Julie’s Haircut, after a three year wait since their latest album. The Wildlife Variations is an EP released by Trovarobatoand Woodworm Music and will be released on limited edition 12” vinyl and digital download on the 4th of June 2012. Recorded at Bunker Studio in Rubiera, the record includes four tracks written and produced by the band (Nicola Caleffi, Luca Giovanardi, Andrea Rovacchi, Andrea Scarfone, Ulisse Tramalloni).
The music contained in the EP has been worked on for the past 3 years, ever since the earliest live shows promoting their previous album “Our Secret Ceremony” (released in 2009 by A Silent Place).
The lyrics, written by Nicola Caleffi and Luca Giovanardi, dwell on the band’s interest towards Mankind and its link with Nature and the Universe, through references to Alchemy, to symbolism and to the relationship between magic and science.
Just like Alchemist Philosophy focused on iconography, the lyrics are filled with powerful symbolic images that concentrate on “emotion” to explain and understand Mankind.
Kepler, mentioned in “Johannes”, is an emblematic figure within this topic: his theories of musica universalis fit exactly halfway between science and magic.
“Dark leopards of the moon” is an image borrowed from a poem by William Butler Yeats, who was an alchemist as well as being a poet: the graphical representation of this image on the album cover, besides being the manifestation of a poetic concept (and therefore, once again, of the will to express “emotion”), also has a strong ironic meaning with plenty of points in common with the “breakfast with a lobster” shown on the cover of their previous album, “Our secret ceremony”.
“The marriage of the sun and the moon” is a typical description of alchemic iconography, where two opposites unite creating a new reality.
“Bonfire” is an attempt to narrate the formation of a community as well as the birth of its sense of belonging to the Earth.
The EP’s title, “The Wildlife Variations”, concerns a possible view of Nature that is free from technological superstructures and a view of Mankind remaining biologically unchanged over thousands of years despite millennia of evolution. Just like Julie’s Haircut makes music today, mixing state-of-the-art digital technologies with centuries-old acoustic instruments which have also remained unchanged for centuries.
This EP is a preparation for the release of the next Julie’s Haircut album, which will be published before the end of 2012, also by Trovarobato/Woodworm.[/en]

Partiti discograficamente con “Fever in the funk house” (Gammapop, 1999), affascinante mix di garage rock, psichedelia noise e melodie pop, sono arrivati 10 anni dopo alla sintesi del doppio album “Our secret ceremony”, vera summa e contemporaneamente punto di svolta della loro storia artistica. In mezzo ci troviamo: l’esperienza Homespleep, cinque album in studio, numerose importanti collaborazioni (Damo Suzuki, Sonic Boom degli Spacemen 3…), la realizzazione dello spettacolo “Transformed” (nel quale hanno reinterpretato “Transformer” di Lou Reed), il recente singolo 10″ dedicato a Jodorowsky e Nino Rota (pubblicato nel giugno 2011 dalla risorta etichetta Gamma Pop) e un buon numero di cambi di formazione.

Julie’s Haircut have been one of the main players of the Italian independent scene since 1994.
From their first album “Fever in the funk house” (Gammapop, 1999), a fascinating mix of Garage Rock, Noise Psychedelia and Pop Melodies, 10 years later Julie’s Haircut had grown into the sound of their double album “Our Secret Ceremony”, which was a condensation and at the same time a turning point in their artistic direction. All sorts of experiences are contained between these two albums: the adventure with the Homesleep label, five studio albums, many important collaborations (Damo Suzuki, Sonic Boom from Spacemen 3), the “Transformed” concert show (where they recreated and reinterpreted Lou Reed’s “Transformer”), their recent 10” vinyl single dedicated to Jodorowsky’s The Holy Mountain and Nino Rota (published in June 2011 by the revived Gamma Pop label) and a fair amount of lineup changes.
“The Wildlife Variations” is the first album Julie’s Haircut release for Trovarobato, as the culmination of a constantly growing friendship which began with their encounter on the stage of Italia Wave 2009 (where they performed with Mariposa) and continued with the record and tour named “Concerto Grosso” (where both bands would share the stage and perform a classic Miles Davis jam).
